Filmed in Seoul, THE PERFECT CITY is a voyage made above all by the vision and the stories of two mysterious personages whose surprising identities will be revealed to us only at the end. In "Old Boy", the film from Park Chan-wook, a man is imprisoned without motive for fifteen years in a small room. The first scenes of the film follow the protagonist in the moments of his liberation and witness the explosion of his uncontainable anger and the desire for an implacable revenge on those who have reduced him to these conditions.
This film represents an extraordinary metaphor of the events of a country that has only recently arrived at democracy after a long period of military dictatorship. From the end of the 1990's until today, the Korean movie industry has made a strong impact on the international market with impressive speed. And it is truly the stories and images of the latest Korean cinema that better reveal the surprising course this country has taken in the last twenty years.
And not only the cinema, but also the soap operas of this little Asian nation, have rapidly made their mark, even in Japan, in China, and above all in the bordering and impenetrable North Korea.
And now, thanks to this film, even we can discover a nation that up until recently we considered distant and unknown and that now is rapidly affirming its presence in all the world in the most important and strategic sectors: medicine (the talked-about creation of new colonies of staminal cells in the work of Doctor Hwang), energy (development of nuclear energy), commerce (the dizzying growth of trade with China), and sports.
