The four elements: earth, air, water and fire, the basic elements that in the imagination traditionally give life. And from fusion, from the mixture of these four a fifth is born, an equally mythical as well as archaic element which seems to have made up the life of the Venetian island of Murano. A particular island, different, small in surface area and world renowned, a name that incarnate in a product that is indissolubly fused with this island: glass, the fifth element that has given luster and lifeblood to Murano. The documentary unravels, in five chapters, the singular story and the mysterious makeup of this island, through the personal testimonies of original inhabitants of Murano, people defined as islanders, but with a meaning perhaps different than the usual. More than tracing a rapid history of glass, the documentary listens to the tales of the old glass masters that are still living on the island, the ninety-three year old Alfredo Barbini in particular, custodian of a unique and legendary art, also documenting their excellent artistic production. "The glass master is like a pagan god, that molds the formless material, the original magma with his divine breath, giving it life and making it palpitate with its own light, creating his more pure and perfect creature: glass. And glass, in its turn, bestows light and life to Murano".
